Hi, I’m Brooke — a Perth-based mum with far too many cookbooks, a food content business called The Tasty Spoonful, and a slight obsession with unusual ingredients and big flavours.
Long before Rocking Rāyu, food was already shaping my life. I studied natural medicine, taught permaculture and organic gardening, ran foraging workshops and spent years learning from chefs and producers. Through it all, one thing remained constant: a fascination with ingredients, flavour and the way great food has a unique ability to bring people to each other and the land.
Thanks to following a foreign man around the world (my now almost-husband of more than a decade), I found myself living in Ireland and working for one of the country's leading food magazines. It was there that I retrained in digital marketing and social media management. During this time, I was immersed in a world of chefs, producers, food writers and passionate home cooks who only fuelled my growing obsession with cooking.
Then came the truly enduring long Irish lockdown. Stuck in a tiny apartment with nowhere to go, for nearly 1.5 years, I cooked. Constantly...
What began as a way to pass the time quickly became a personal challenge to learn everything I could about flavour, ingredients and technique. In the years leading up to my son's birth, I cooked well over a thousand recipes, experimenting with cuisines from around the world and developing a particular obsession with funky condiments, and creative ways to make food delicious with ease.
With the impending birth of my son, and the lockdown finally ending, we decided it was time to move back to Australia.
An obsession with food turned into an obsession-worthy chilli crunch
After a very short time, I found myself missing a chilli crunch that I had fallen in love with in Ireland. So naturally, when I couldn't find anything that quite scratched the same itch, I started making my own.
What began as a single homemade nostalgia trip quickly evolved. Drawing on my love of quality ingredients, flavour and Australian produce, I started experimenting with new combinations and sharing them at local markets. One batch became another, customers kept coming back for more, and before I knew it, Rocking Rāyu the business was born.
Today, our product development is still driven by that same curiosity—creating bold, flavour-packed condiments that make everyday food taste extraordinary, while celebrating the incredible ingredients Australia has to offer.
